We’re counting down to MSU’s season opener against Oklahoma State on Aug. 31, giving you a significant number to ponder as August trudges on. Today’s number is…

4.
Devon Bell admitted last year that he had to battle nerves, which you’d expect from a freshman, especially when he’s the starting placekicker. Despite the butterflies, Bell did just fine, making 14 of 21 field goals, including four from 40 yards or longer (on seven attempts).
Now a sophomore, Bell has enough experience under his belt that the nerves shouldn’t be so bothersome any more.
“It took me time to adjust to the speed of the game,” Bell said recently. “But this year I’m a lot more comfortable, a lot more calm. It’s a lot easier this year.”
Bell had a tough act to follow in Derek DePasquale, who left as the second-most accurate field goal kicker in school history (32 of 42, 76.2 percent). If he stays on course and holds the job the next three years, Bell should be able to put his name near the top of that list. And he might also challenge Artie Cosby‘s school record of 48 made field goals.
